2009 SEIU Local 517M Annual Meeting
The SEIU Local 517M Annual Leadership Meeting was held at the Local’s Lansing Office on Thursday, July 23, 2009. Over ninety members attended to hear speakers and engage in discussions on various topics.

The meeting started with an Executive Board meeting. The meeting was adjourned to the parking lot where the “parking lot picnic” commenced with a barbeque. Various speakers and video presentations followed. The kick-off speaker was Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero who welcomed the participants to Lansing. Video greetings were presented from SEIU International President Andy Stern and Congressman Mark Schauer.

Secretary of State Candidate Jocelyn Benson stopped by to talk about the issues that convinced her to run for Secretary of State.

Lt. Governor John Cherry also made an appearance to discuss the economy of Michigan.

A "Point / Counterpoint" style debate was held on healthcare between member Brian Grochowski and Charlie Bauer. Discussions and small group exercises were held on the SEIU Member Strength campaign of building the union through participation.
Retiring members were recognized for their service to the Local. The members are: Dwints Bowman, Saginaw Public Schools, Region 1 (Dwints was unfortunately unable to attend); Bill Ford, DELEG, Human Services Support Division; and outgoing Local 517M President Ann Mapes, Department of Agriculture, Scientific and Engineering Unit.

The SEIU Member of the Year award was given to Yolanda Langston. She works for the City of Detroit, is a Unit President, Region 3 Secretary and Local 517M Executive Board Member. Yolanda has proven herself extremely skillful in leadership and representation. “We are all proud of Yolanda and her accomplishments in representing the membership of Local 517M” said Howard Gordon, Region 3 Program Coordinator. She was presented the award by President Ann Mapes (left in picture).
