Notification from the Office of the State Employer (OSE) went out on September 16, 2019 warning of a temporary lay-off that may affect many of you if a budget is not in place before October 1st, 2019.
This notice comes after several months of debate and delays concerning road funding and is the latest in an ongoing battle between the Legislature and Governor over proposed funding levels and methods for services to the citizens of Michigan.
While the potential shutdown could impact our members in various ways, the State did provide a series of Frequently Asked Questions, which can be found at the following link for your individual review (Frequently Asked Questions). This information was gathered from the Civil Service Rules 2-4, and Regulations, 2.01 & 2.02
SEIU Local 517M leaders have been working with the State, and will continue over the next few weeks to aid in any way possible to find solutions to these issues, and encourage legislators on both sides of the aisle to come together, roll up their sleeves and do what’s best on behalf of the state of Michigan.
It should also be noted that the prolonged disagreement and uncertainty over the budget has led to significant delays in state employee bargaining and has essentially halted the process until such time that a budget agreement is reached.
Between now and October 1st, all members are advised to pay special attention to departmental communications, as well as SEIU Local 517M publications, since they will include member specific information and updates as they become available.
