COVID-19 Letter to Members

Dear SEIU 517M Members,

Last night, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that in order to slow the spread of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan, she is ordering the closure of all K-12 school buildings, public, private, and boarding, starting Monday, March 16th until Sunday, April 5th.

At this point, information surrounding the outbreak of COVID-19 continues to change rapidly and has led the World Health Organization (WHO) to upgrade the spread of the virus from a global health crisis to a pandemic.

As of 3/12/2020, the number of presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in Michigan has reached 12 with more expected in the coming days/months.

As a Union, SEIU Local 517M remains committed to ensuring the health and safety of all members and is dedicated to providing the best possible service, information and resources during this uncertain time.

We know that there are many questions that remain unanswered and we ask for your patience as we confront this unprecedented situation. In the meantime, SEIU 517M we will continue to work with the State of Michigan and individual employers to answer questions and navigate the appropriate responses.

For up-to-date information, members should visit Michigan.gov/Coronavirus and CDC.gov/Coronavirus. Additional information will be posted at www.seiu517m.org when it is available.

Finally, all SEIU 517M members are encouraged to follow the prescribed protocols for preventing the spread of COVID-19 and we recommend you share this information with your co-workers, friends and family members.

The best prevention for viruses, such as influenza, the common cold or COVID-19 is to:

• Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If not available, use hand sanitizer.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or upper sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
• Avoid contact with people who are sick.
• If you are sick, stay home, and avoid contact with others.

Patients with confirmed infection of COVID-19 have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of:
• Fever
• Cough
• Shortness of breath
