SEIU Michigan State Council endorses Reform Michigan Government Now! proposal

Monday, August 18, 2008

LANSING — The SEIU Michigan State Council has endorsed the Reform Michigan Government Now! proposal, the 80,000-member union announced today.

“The Reform Michigan Government Now! proposal will streamline our government so people can work together on our state’s priorities and solve Michigan’s problems,” said Phil Thompson, SEIU Michigan State Council president and executive vice president of SEIU Local 517M. “Our members support this proposal because it will hold elected leaders more accountable and help let citizens know who’s getting the job done and who’s not.”

Supporters of RMGN turned in nearly 500,000 signatures last month to place the reform proposal on the November ballot. However, the Michigan Chamber of Commerce and its allies have sued the state to block voters from having the chance to vote on the proposal.

“A broad coalition of Republicans, Democrats and independents support Reform Michigan Government Now! because it represents commonsense reforms that will help move Michigan forward,” Thompson said. “Michigan citizens — including 80,000 SEIU members — want change in how things get done in Lansing, and they should be allowed the opportunity to vote on this proposal.”
