City of Detroit Employees 2nd Annual Bowl-A-Rama/Fundraiser

The City of Detroit Employees are having their 2nd Annual Bowl-A-Rama/Fundraiser at Cloverland Bowling Lanes on Sunday, April 26, 2009 starting at 6:00 p.m. The Lanes are located at 28900 Schoolcraft Rd. (I-96 Service Drive) between Inkster Road and Middlebelt Road.
Cost is $20 per person and $10 for kids 15 and under. Cost includes 3 games of bowling, shoe rental, pizza and pop. Bring your team or join a team. Maximum of 5 per team. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.
Advance team registration and payment due by March 30, 2009.

On December 12, 2008 a retirement luncheon was held for City of Detroit employee Velinda Lewis. She was honored with the Spirit of Detroit award and pin on behalf of Detroit City Council member Kwame Kenyatta. She also received a plaque from Local 517M honoring her years of service to the union. The former Detroit DPW unit president was given her awards by current unit president and 517M Executive Board member Yolanda Langston. Congratulations to Velinda and enjoy your retirement!

Taylor School Members Win Contract Extension

Members working for the Taylor School District recently came to an agreement on a two year contract extension. The new language will expire in 2010. Highlights include no changes to health care, half of the fingerprinting costs will be reimbursed by the employer, there is an additional paid holiday, and a Memo of Understanding on sick/personal benefit days.
City of Royal Oak Member Wins Arbitration

A City of Royal Oak member was terminated for an alleged violation of violence in the workplace standards. A grievance was filed and progressed to an arbitration hearing. The arbitrator found that there was not just cause for the termination and awarded the grievant full back pay but not reinstatment to his former position. The Union has filed an appeal in court on the failure to return the grievant back to work.
