Detroit Skating Party A Success
The AFRAM Skating Party, given as a fundraising event, by the Detroit Chapter on Saturday, September 3, 2011, was a success! For the second time this year we had a very good turnout that included SEIU 517M union members and their families. Many of the participants expressed that they had an enjoyable experience. It was encouraging to know that we were able to reach out to the community by having some of our SEIU members purchase skating tickets that were donated to underprivileged children in the Detroit area. This kind of generosity and kindness is a reflection of the goodwill that SEIU members display more often than the public are made aware of through media sources around the state. Once again, Yolanda Langston, President, Region 3 and Cephus Porchia, Vice President, Region 3 were there to lend a hand in making this a successful event. I am very proud of each person who contributed to the success of this fundraiser and I want to thank you all for the great service you provide to our customers each and every day.
Reception Sponsored at the Annual Meeting
The SEIU Local 517M AFRAM Caucus sponsored a reception on Thursday, July 21, 2011 in conjunction with the SEIU Local 517M Annual Meeting. Several speakers told of the impact that AFRAM has made in their communities and in their lives. SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry arrived and spoke to the reception. There were slideshows of AFRAM events held in the past year and what AFRAM plans are for the future.
