Candidates for Governor In The Press

This section will be updated with quotes from the candidates for Michigan Governor.

Lobby Day a Success

The third annual SEIU Local 517M legislative lobby held May 6 was a great success. Fifty members employed by the state, schools and local government from around the state meet with their Legislators. Topics of their discussions included closing tax loopholes, public service accountability, privatization in our schools, and revenue sharing. Several legislators agreed to sit done for more detailed discussions about the issues confronting public employees. Thank you cards were also presented to the 15 Senators who voted to save the state employee’s negotiated 3 % pay increase for fiscal year 2010 – 2011.

Candidates for Governor "Walk a Day in My Shoes"

Candidates for Governor worked with SEIU members to get a feeling for how hard it is for workers in the SEIU represented occupations. Candidate for Governor State Representative Alma Wheeler Smith (D- South Lyon) walked a day in several Flint school occupations including food service and transportation. Candidates for Governor Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and House Speaker Andy Dillon both walked with nursing home workers doing jobs in housekeeping, laundry and food preparation. Doing a “Walk a Day” is part of the SEIU candidate endorsement process.
