Detroit regional AFRAM Celebration of Black History Month

By Yolanda Langston

On February 10, 2009 , Local 517M AFRAM Detroit Caucus headed by Phil Patrick and Yolanda Langston hosted a special program celebrating Black History Month. Special guest Speakers were President Pro-Tempore Dr. JoAnn Watson, of the Detroit City Council, and Council Member, Kwame Kenyatta. Both spoke on their backgrounds, struggles, trials and successes, and what it takes to be a positive leader in our community. They shared stories on their childhood and Mrs. Watson being raised by southerners. They also shared their passion on staying involved with our youth.

Local 517M AFRAM State officers Marvin Cook and Andy Johnson were also in attendance to speak to the membership on the importance of participating in our union activities, along with the existing activities of the caucus.

The night was filled a sense of unity, as our members, Maydell Bell sung a spiritual song "We need a Saviour, and his name is Jesus", and our membership also joined Sergeant of Arms, Melvin McClain in singing the National Black Anthem, "Lift Every Voice".

It really filled my heart with a sense of joy to see everyone fellowship and enjoy one another. To simply take a brief moment away from the stresses that life brings upon us. It was a blessed event.

Letter of Thanks from AFRAM to Local 517M

Dear SEIU 517M family:

The SEIU 517M AFRAM Caucus would like to say thank you for your very generous contribution to the school supplies fundraiser. The AFRAM Caucus is very proud to know that 517M supports AFRAM and its activities. This donation may not seem to be that big of a deal to most but it is a very important part in lending a helping hand to those in need.

AFRAM Caucus Established at Local 517M

On October 17, 2007 the SEIU Local 517M Executive Board voted unaminously to establish a African-American Caucus (AFRAM) at Local 517M. AFRAM was formed at SEIU International in 1996 and is the largest and oldest of the International's 7 caucuses.  AFRAM's objective is to develop African-American leadership within SEIU.  Membership is not limited to African-Americans only; AFRAM membership is open to everyone in SEIU.

The History of AFRAM

The creation of the African American Caucus within SEIU evolved over several decades via several internal structures, all having root in concerns about full participation in all levels of SEIU’s structure and resource allocations.

AFRAM Mission Statement

The National African American Caucus of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is committed to enhancing opportunities for education, training mentorship, leadership development and networking for SEIU members and staff of African descent.

We further engage to promote social, economic and political justice within our workplace, our communities, our nation and within our union.

We shall further encourage our members to actively engage in efforts to organize the unorganized and to fully participate in the development and implementation of labor’s political agenda and programs.
