AFRAM Caucus Established at Local 517M
On October 17, 2007 the SEIU Local 517M Executive Board voted unaminously to establish a African-American Caucus (AFRAM) at Local 517M. AFRAM was formed at SEIU International in 1996 and is the largest and oldest of the International's 7 caucuses.
AFRAM's objective is to develop African-American leadership within SEIU. Membership is not limited to African-Americans only; AFRAM membership is open to everyone in SEIU.
On October 13, 2007 in the SEIU Local 517M Flint office; SEIU Local 517M AFRAM Michigan State Caucus was presented an official charter from the National AFRAM President Marchel Smiley of SEIU Local 722. Officers and delegate positions of the AFRAM Michigan State Caucus have been established and filled. Regional caucuses are currently being extablished in Saginaw, Flint, Detroit, Grand Rapids and Lansing. This will enable the State Caucus to begin AFRAM's agenda on a two tier level. The AFRAM Michigan State Caucus agenda is to develop leadership skills and to encourage more participation in the various programs of Local 517M and SEIU International.
